Copenhagen pronounced best Nordic AI-hub
Artificial Intelligence start-ups saw the largest rise in investments of any tech field in 2024. Now the Global Tech Ecosystem Index 2025 by investor-analysts Dealroom.co has ranked Copenhagen as the number 3 AI ecosystem in the EU. This puts the Danish capital ahead of tech-meccas such as Stockholm, Tokyo and Seoul.
Support from seed to stock-market
Dealroom has indexed startup ecosystems in 288 cities across 69 countries. These were ranked by absolute metrics such as venture capital, enterprise value creation, unicorns, and university linkages. All these hubs have the depth and infrastructure to support startups from seed to IPO and often shape global tech trends.
Exceptional innovation output
When it comes to Artificial Intelligence, Copenhagen outperforms most EU cities in absolute terms. On a per-capita basis the city also shows exceptional innovation output per capita. It is marked by high startup activity, research intensity, and strong university linkages, proving that world-class ecosystems can emerge anywhere.
Big fish in a smaller pond
Denmark- and by extension Copenhagen, is still part of a worrying trend, though. North America vastly outperforms the old world. For every dollar invested in AI in Europe, North America gets 6,5.
A long history of AI-excellence
The innovation district is home to a great deal of the stakeholder giving Copenhagen such a strong position. Innovation district partner University of Copenhagen Dept of computer science has a historically strong position in Artificial Intelligence. Especially within the sub-fields of Human-Computer Interaction, Natural Language Processing and algorithms. The strong AI position of Copenhagen is continuously strengthened by actors such as:
- Pioneer Centre for Artificial Intelligence which studies Artificial Intelligence for societal challenges, people and design
- Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Society which has a focus on responsible AI innovation and implementation
- UCPH SCIENCE AI Centre which works to promote and secure Cross-disciplinary collaborations across faculties and departments at University of Copenhagen, and for outreach to industrial and governmental partners
