New Metro stations increase walkability of Copenhagen Science City
Walking to work has become an option for almost all researchers, students and staff working in Copenhagen Science City. Thanks to three new stations on Copenhagen’s new Metro line “Cityringen”; no location in Copenhagen’s largest innovation district is now further than an eight-minute walk from the nearest Metro-station. This supports Copenhagen Science City’s claim to be one of the most walkable innovation districts in the world. By Jes Andersen.

Rapid transit on business class
After eight years of construction work and an expected price tag of 24.6 billion DKK (3.3 billion €) Copenhageners are expecting a rapid transit system in absolute business class, and it seems they are getting it. Like the rest of the Metro system in the Danish capital, the Metro circle line is driverless and its trains run every two minutes during peak hours.
New link to neighbouring areas
Stations Skjolds Plads, Vibenshus Runddel and Trianglen are all within the 800-metre radius encircling the innovation district. The new circle line connects Copenhagen Science City directly to the national and international train-hub Hovedbanegaarden and to 16 other stations in Copenhagen’s historical centre and in neighbourhoods Østerbro, Vesterbro and Frederiksberg.
12 minute ride to anywhere
Driving all the way round the new circle line takes 24 minutes. In other words, none of the 17 stations along the line is further than a 12-minute ride. Five of the 17 stations are rail-and road-junctions, which provide access to regional, national and international traffic. Hovedbanegaarden, Østerport and Nørrebro hook up to the S-Train lines and to the regional commuter train services provided by DSB. Kongens Nytorv and Frederiksberg gives access to the M2; a direct Metro line to Copenhagen Airport.
Research becomes easier
The Metro Cityring or circle line also makes it a lot easier for the 40,000 researchers, students and staff in Copenhagen Science City to visit Copenhagen’s other innovation districts, Frederiksberg Science City (Metro stations Frederiksberg, Frederiksberg Allé and Aksel Møllers have) and Oerestad Innovation City Copenhagen (Stations Islands Brygge, DR Byen Universitetet, Sundby, Bella Center, Ørestad and Vestamager)
At one end, the world. At the other, a walk in the park
For international collaborators, investors and companies choosing to co-locate, the new line and its stations make face-to-face meetings a lot easier. Copenhagen Airport is highly connected to cities hosting tech and science hubs all over the world, and a ride from the airport to the most remote station in Copenhagen Science City, Skjolds Plads, is a 21-minute Metro trip at a ticket price of just 22 DKK. (2,95 €) At the end of the metro-ride, visitors can treat themselves to, literally, a walk in the park. An eight minute walk in the park to any destination in Copenhagen Science City.
